Cooper Tracks Diabetes FAQ
Who is the program for?
Cooper tracks diabetes program is for those diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, history of diabetes or history of gestational diabetes.
What is required?
Independent with blood sugar management, stable blood pressure and heart rate, ambulatory, able to perform 10 min sustained activity or exercise, medical clearance from doctor. After signing up for class participants will complete paperwork and get clearance from their doctor. Each participant will then have an orientation scheduled after forms are reviewed- a pre and post health assessments will be completed. Cardiovascular, fitness and body composition will be completed. Orientation to the facility will be completed. The trainer will then create a workout card for the individual. A post questionnaire will be completed by participants at the end of all sessions.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, breathable clothing to be active and work out in, suggestions include shorts, sweatpants, leggings, t-shirts and comfortable supportive tennis shoes.
What should I bring?
Blood glucose monitor, test strips, insulin pen or pump. Fast sugars- glucose tabs, gel, or fruit juice. Carbohydrate snack 15g – granola bar, crackers, cheese stick. We stress the importance of staying properly hydrated, so make sure to bring plenty of water. Bottled water is also available for purchase at the gym. Community “yoga mats” (may be used for warm up/cool down) are also available, although you may bring your own if you prefer. You can find yoga mats for purchase at almost any retailer (Meijer, Walmart, Marshalls, etc).
What should I do before class?
We do have guidelines prior to our diabetes program depending on your individual diagnosis. Blood sugar should be checked and greater than 100 mg/dL. Have a snack up to 30 min prior to exercise. Plan on a 30 min workout – snack should be 15 g carb.
How long is the class?
8 weeks, 2 sessions a week for 60 minutes
Where is the class offered?
At this time Cooper tracks is offered only at our Wisconsin Athletic Club Lake Country location. We are hoping to expand to other WAC locations in the future.
What happens during class?
Warm up, aerobic and strength activities, cool down, education (always a tailored approach to the individual)
How many will be in the class?
Sessions can be done as private (1-on-1), semi-private (groups of 2-4) or small group (groups of 5-10).
What can I expect?
To build community, gain confidence and knowledge. You do not need to be a member of the WAC to participate, but we do encourage exercising on your own outside of sessions. Options for additional exercise will be discussed by your trainer.
What if I can’t keep up?
If at any time you feel frustrated or unable to keep up with those around you, please communicate that to your trainer. Modifications and suggestions can be offered. Do not do any exercises that you are uncomfortable doing, talk to your coaches first if you are unsure of a specific exercise. This program offers a non-judgmental and encouraging environment which we hope allows you to share any concerns at any time.
Are there lockers available?
Lockers and shower facilities are available in the locker rooms at Wisconsin Athletic Club. Use of all WAC facilities is allowed on class days. There are also coat racks and shoe mats available for use.
Who are the coaches?
Personal trainers and administrative staff have been trained through Cooper Tracks 101, Cardiovascular and Diabetes programs, based in Dallas, TX.
If you’re interested in becoming a member at the WAC Lake Country or any of our other locations, you can meet with someone from our membership staff. A WAC membership is not required to participate in the Cooper Tracks program.
